Ailing actress Zsa Zsa Gabor is recovering in hospital after doctors successfully amputated half of her right leg on Friday (14Jan11).
Gabor was forced to lose her leg after a serious gangrene infection spread to her bone.
The 93 year old had been prescribed a course of strong antibiotics as an alternative to severing the limb, but the medicine proved ineffective and doctors warned her husband Prince Frederic von Anhalt that immediate action was needed to halt the spread of infection.
Surgeons removed the infected part of her limb at Los Angeles' UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center on Friday and the operation went without complication.
Gabor is now being monitored closely by medics at the facility.
The hospital's David Rigberg says, "The surgery... went well, however, she is in frail health so we will continue to monitor her closely."
The actress' spokesman John Blanchette hopes the star will be able to return to her Beverly Hills home after two weeks in time to celebrate her 94th birthday on 6 February (11).
