Radio and TV personality Ryan Seacrest confirmed the news on his KIIS FM show on Friday (29Jan16) as Zayn released his debut solo single Pillowtalk.

No other acts have been confirmed for the pop music festival, which will take place at the Stub Hub Center in Carson, California on 14 May (16), but last year's line-up included Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Calvin Harris, Nick Jonas, Jason Derulo, and Meghan Trainor.

Zayn's new song hits the streets 10 months after he left One Direction in the middle of an Asian tour. The band continued the trek and released a new album, Made in The AM, as a four-piece, before announcing plans to take a hiatus throughout 2016.

The former One Direction hunk phoned in to Seacrest's radio show on Friday to discuss his new music and confirm his Wango Tango festival slot.

He told the host fans can expect some "weird, alternative-R&B" on his debut solo album Mind of Mine, adding, "It's all very sparse and random. They're (songs) all kind of different thoughts. The music reflects that as well, because they're different emotions, so you feel different things through each song.

"There's a lot of different genres of music even in there. There's, like, some R&B more inflected, and then there are others that are, like, reggae-sounding, then you got, like, upbeat (and) down tunes, then you got, like, soul-ballad songs. It's all a mix."

He also took a moment to thank his former bandmates and fans of One Direction for helping him get to a place where he can launch a successful solo career, stating, "When the opportunity of a band came, I wasn't going to be an idiot and say, 'No'. It's a massive opportunity and I'm massively grateful for that. If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't be here. I kind of used that as a springboard, I guess, to help me further down the line."

Unfortunately, Zayn didn't chat about his romance with model Gigi Hadid, who plays his love interest in the video for Pillowtalk, but he did get candid when Seacrest asked him if he finds it hard to express himself outside a recording studio.

"I'm an introvert-extrovert... I do find it hard sometimes to express myself in normal situations... so I use that for my creative stimulus and put that into my music... That's a great form of dealing with things... What better way to write a song about it."

And he also brushed off questions about the most romantic day of the year, confessing he had no Valentine's plans for 14 February (16).
