The Heads Will Roll hitmaker, real name Karen Orzolek, was just starting out with the group when her closest pal passed away unexpectedly, and the star admits she will forever be grateful for the support she received.
Choking back tears, she told The New York Times Magazine, "This band has gotten us all through a lot. Me specifically, the death of one of my best friends around the time we started. I was 22. I was a baby. I was totally traumatised and devastated and lost, and if I didn't have the Yeah Yeah Yeahs taking me around the world... I'm (not sure what would have happened)."
Orzolek also reveals the tragedy forced the Yeah Yeah Yeahs to pull out of a number of gigs while touring the U.K. in 2002 because she couldn't cope with the added stress.
She added, "The idea of cancelling shows so early on is frightening for everybody. It's so taboo, but I felt on the verge of a meltdown."
