Will Smith becomes so obsessed when preparing for a movie, his family "has to be prepared" to deal with the character he's playing.

The I, ROBOT actor found playing boxer Muhammad Ali in the 2001 biopic ALI affected his home life and proved "difficult" for wife Jada Pinkett Smith and their three children to cope with.

Smith, 35, says, "It's difficult for actors to be successful in relationships because your life takes on the tone of the film you're working on.

"One day you're a man in black, the next day you're Muhammad Ali and six months from now you could be a psycho killer.

"You have to hypnotise yourself into believing you're another person and you have to walk around and feel the character.

"Your family has to be prepared to deal with that, so it definitely affects your life."
