Will Smith's alien comedy Men In Black Iii beamed its way to the top of the U.S. box office over the weekend (25-27May12), putting an end to the reign of superhero smash The Avengers.
The widely-anticipated Men in Black sequel, which marks Smith's return to the big screen for the first time in four years, raked in $55 million (£34 million), while Mark Ruffalo's adventure epic - which had held onto the top spot for three weeks running - grossed $37 million (£23 million), pushing its earnings from American ticket sales to $514 million (£321 million).
Even though The Avengers failed to hold onto its coveted first place position, the record-breaking film earned yet another honour after becoming only the fourth movie ever to top half a billion dollars domestically in the U.S.
In third was Rihanna's Battleship with takings of $10.8 million (£7.8 million), while controversial comedy The DICtator earned $9.6 million (£6 million) to land fourth and rounding out the top five is Chernobyl Diaries ($8 million/£5 million).
