New comedy Step Brothers has claimed the number one spot at the UK box office.

The Sony Pictures release, starring Will Ferrell and John C Reilly as warring middle-aged men, debuted at the top of the charts with £1.16 million in its first three days on release.

Musical adaptation Mamma Mia! held firm at number two while Liv Tyler-starring horror The Strangers, from first-time writer-director Bryan Bertino, opened in third.

The Dark Knight dropped one place but remains in the top five in the week in which it became only the second film ever to break the $500 million (£276.8 million) barrier in the US.
