Plucky rocker Wilko Johnson appeared in public on Wednesday (22Oct14) for the first time since undergoing major cancer surgery earlier this year (14) and told fans: "I'm still standing!"
The former Dr. Feelgood star was diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer in January, 2013 but he stunned doctors by refusing treatment and defying their predictions he only had months to live.
In April (14), he underwent a nine-hour operation during which he had the tumour, his spleen, pancreas and parts of his intestines removed, and he has since been recuperating at home.
He appeared at a public event for the first time since the surgery when he attended the Q Awards in London on Wednesday to accept the prestigious Icon honour, and he told the audience, "I was in extra time. I'm still on my feet!"
The big winners at the ceremony were British band Kasabian, who scooped two of the four awards they were up for, taking home Best Live Act and Best Act In The World Today.
Singer Tom Meighan dedicated the former to his father, and when receiving the latter he told the crowd, "Thank you so much! Best act in the world? Honestly? Hell yeah!"
Pop star Ed Sheeran added to his trophy cabinet by taking the Best Solo Artist title, rockers Elbow won Best Album for The Take Off And Landing Of Everything, and Sam Smith was named Best New Act.
Culture Club were handed the Idols honour, Johnny Marr won the inaugural Les Paul Award for influential musicians, and Xtc frontman Andy Partridge took the Classic Songwriter trophy.
