THE White Stripes frontman Jack White defied doctors' advice to play at the Australia and New Zealand summer festival Big Day Out last week (begs23JAN06).

White decided to go ahead with the travelling event, despite cancelling a string of gigs earlier this month (JAN06), when doctors ordered him to rest damaged vocal chords.

He explained, "It's going pretty good, except I've had three doctors tell me to cancel the tour for my voice, so that's the only bad thing.

"I have to keep quiet during the day most of the time.

"Every time I play, I sort of make it worse, so we're trying to figure out a way to get through this so I can take a break after."

Big Day Out started in the New Zealand capital Auckland on 20 January (06) and continued on to Australia's Gold Coast, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.
