In an announcement that surprised -- if not astonished -- the movie industry, the Walt Disney Co. announced on Tuesday that it has acquired George Lucas's Lucasfilm LTD in a stock-and-cash deal worth $4.05 billion. The Deal calls for the unit, which will be headed by longtime Lucas collaborator Kathleen Kennedy, to roll out at least three more Star Wars movies, the first in 2015. In a statement, Disney chief Robert Iger said, This transaction combines a world-class portfolio of content including Star Wars, one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time, with Disney's unique and unparalleled creativity across multiple platforms, businesses, and markets to generate sustained growth and drive significant long-term value. Also included in the sale are technology divisions Industrial Light & Magic, Skywalker Sound, THX, and LucasArts.
