TiVo, which pioneered at-home digital video recording but which has struggled against copy-cat competition, has received a solid endorsement for its new Roamio devices from Walt Mossberg, who reviews consumer digital hardware and software for the Wall Street Journal. Calling them the holy grail of settop boxes, Mosberg notes that they combine the functions of a cable box, a DVR and a device for receiving most digital video over the Internet on Apple iOS devices. The Higher-end devices also allows viewing live or recorded shows in the home, but Mossberg says that the out-of-home streaming feature was terrible in every place he tested it except in an Apple store that had a fast wi-fi connection. TiVo told Mossberg that it is refining the feature and expects that the problems he experienced will be resolved in a few more months.
