It may still be struggling to find outlets on most cable systems, but al-Jazeera English has been attracting viewers, critical respect, and numerous awards, especially for its coverage of the recent Middle East unrest. Its latest honor comes from the Online Journalism Awards, which gave it its top award for al-Jazeera's coverage of the uprising in Egypt. Al-Jazeera online beat out competition from the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and the Associated Press. The judging panel praised Al Jazeera's coverage, observing that it was "informed by people affected by what was happening." Accepting the award, Mohamed Nanabhay, head of online for al-Jazeera English, said, "Not much can compare to being an active part of such a tumultuous period of history; however acknowledgement from your professional peers is something to savor." BBC News won the award for general excellence in online journalism and Arianna Huffington's HuffingtonPost.com, won for online commentary/blogging.
