Wale has landed his first number one album.

The rapper's album 'The Gifted' has sold 158,000 copies in its first week of release, topping the Billboard 200 album chart, according to information and sales tracking system Nielsen SoundScan.

The album's lead single 'Bad', which has a guest appearance from singer-songwriter Tiara Thomas, was released in February and peaked at number three on the Billboard rap charts.

Wale - real name Olubowale Victor Akintimehin - knocked Kanye West's 'Yeezus' from the top spot.

The 'Black Skinhead' rapper's album sold just 65,000 copies in its second week of release - 80 per cent less than its first week sales of 327,000 copies - and it is now sitting at number three on the chart.

The 80 per cent plunge is the greatest recorded drop for a number one album since Madonna's 'MDNA', which had a historic drop of 87 per cent in April 2012.

Last week's other big debut, 'Born Sinner' by hip hop recording artist J. Cole, holds its position in the second spot selling 84,000 in the past week.

The 28-year-old artist's latest release follows his 2011 disc, 'Ambition, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.
