Orange is the New Black star Aduba completed the 26.2 mile (42.2 kilometre) race across her native Massachusetts in just over five hours, while The Lord of the Rings actor Astin had a slight lead, finishing in four hours and 49 minutes.

Both celebrities had good reasons to run - Aduba called on fans to sponsor her run in support of Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

The Emmy Award winner, who previously took part in the New York Marathon in 2013 after being inspired to raise charity funds by four friends and family members who were battling the disease, raised a total of $10,886 (£6,803) for cancer research.

Meanwhile, Astin, a frequent marathon runner, was running on behalf of The Martin Richard Foundation, the organisation founded by the parents of eight-year-old Martin Richard, who died during the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013.

Astin's initial goal was to raise $20,000 (£12,500), but donations reached a total of $22,102 (£13,813) - all of which will go towards the foundation's mission to promote peace by investing in education, athletics and community.

Also among the 30,000 runners was Irish actor Kevin J. Ryan, who clocked the best celebrity time of four hours and 16 minutes.

Following his impressive achievement, he took to Twitter.com to share a picture of himself at the finish line, and added the caption, "WE DID IT THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR LOYAL SUPPORT!! What an amazing adventure!"
