Sitar superstar Ustad Vilayat Khan (corr) has lost his battle with lung cancer in a Bombay hospital. He was 76.

The Bangladesh-born musician was a superstar in India and south Asia and became a guest lecturer at ALI AKBAR COLLEGE OF MUSIC in San Rafael, California, where he made his second home.

Khan was credited with pioneering a new vocal style in sitar playing, which made it seem as if his instrument was singing.

The sitar player caused controversy in the 1960s when he turned down international music awards after claiming the judges weren't competent enough to comment on his work.
