R&B star Usher altered his travel plans to fly to New York this week (begs18Feb13) so he could pay a personal Tv tribute to Clive Davis.

The legendary music mogul was given an unexpected treat during an interview with talk show host Katie Couric, who introduced Usher to the stage and revealed that the Yeah! hitmaker had to make a last-minute change to his flight to get to the Big Apple in time for the pre-taped chat, which aired on Tuesday (19Feb13).

The singer then went on to honour J Records boss Davis for helping him learn about the business side of the music industry by allowing Usher to sit in on his many meetings in his office as he prepared to launch US Records in 2002.

He said, "Clive Davis was the first person to ever give me a label, an opportunity to be an executive...

"(It's) always a pleasure (observing Davis in his meetings) because you learn so much and it's an opportunity to really see how the magic is created, how it's done. You can really only imagine what goes on behind the veil of entertainment and being able to see that... just fuelled my ambition to become an executive and find my way."

And Usher, who will appear as a judge on the upcoming new season of Tv talent show The Voice, revealed he is grateful for the advice Davis and his original record boss Antonio 'L.A.' Reid have given him throughout his career.

He added, "Without that artist development and that ability to understand how to present myself, you know, I have an understanding of style, I would not be in a position to be a coach on The Voice and introduce talent like Justin Bieber... I wouldn't be the mentor that I am today."
