Perry's latest cross-dressing Madea comedy, Tyler Perry's Boo! A Madea Halloween, was a big hit at cinemas upon its release on Friday (21Oct16), with a $27.6 million (£22.6 million) first-weekend haul - over $4 million (£3.3 million) more than action film sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.

But Cruise and director Edward Zwick won't be feeling too sore - their film shot to top of the worldwide box office with $54 million (£44 million).

Meanwhile, horror sequel Ouija: Origin of Evil has entered the new North American box office at three, with a $14.1 million (£11.5 million) weekend take.

That film is likely to experience a surge of interest in the week leading up to Halloween (31Oct16).

Ben Affleck's new film The Accountant and the movie adaptation of Paula Hawkins' bestselling thriller The Girl on a Train round out the top five, while Jon Hamm and Gal Gadot's new action comedy Keeping Up With the Joneses fails to thrill U.S> cinemagoers, coming in at seven with a disappointing $5.6 million (£4.6 million).

In the film, Hamm and Gadot go undercover as spies.

It's a big weekend for early Oscar favourite Moonlight - Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris' new movie has earned a healthy $415,000 (£339,000) in just four locations in New York and Los Angeles, with almost every screening selling out.

In comparison, Ewan MCGregor's directorial debut, American Pastoral, made $151,000 (£123.4 million) for the weekend in 50 theatres.
