The fourth installment in the Transformers franchise has been named the highest-grossing film of the year (14).

Transformers: Age of Extinction, starring Mark Wahlberg, topped a list of 2014's most profitable movies by bringing in $1.1 billion at the global box office, seeing off competition from Guardians of the Galaxy, which trailed in second with $772 million (£483 million).

Angelina Jolie's turn in Disney's Maleficent was another big seller, taking third place in the list with $758 million (£474 million), ahead of a superhero sequels X-Men: Days of Future Past and Captain America: The Winter Soldier in fourth and fifth place respectively.
