Tracy Morgan has laughed off his hospitalization at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah and confirmed he would be returning to work shooting 30 Rock on Tuesday (24 January 2012). The comedian - who was at the center of controversy for most of 2011 - was taken to the Park City Medical Center after collapsing at an awards ceremony at the festival, according to ABC News.
Morgan was being honored by the Creative Coalition Spotlight Awards when he began feeling unwell and subsequently collapsed. In a video since emerging online, the comedian looks uncomfortable on the red-carpet and is heard to say "This is crazy". His publicist Lewis Kay says altitude and exhaustion was the reason for the hospitalization - Utah's elevation is around 7,000 feet. Tweeting on Monday, Tracy joked with followers, "Superman ran into a little kryptonite. The high altitude in Utah shook up this kid from Brooklyn", before thanking the hospital staff for their efforts. A spokeswoman for the hospital had previously rubbished reports by that the actor appeared "intoxicated" while attending the awards ceremony, saying, "He is with his fiance and grateful to the Park City Medical Center for their care. Any reports of Tracy consuming alcohol are 100% false". Morgan was escorted out of the building following his acceptance speech, where he fell unconscious and was rushed to hospital.
The 43-year-old has a history of medical issues - he suffers from diabetes and underwent a kidney transplant two years ago. It was a controversial year for the comedian in 2011 - during a stand-up show in Nashville he claimed he would stab his son if he turned out to be gay. He later returned to the scene of the gig to apologize for his comments.
