Country star Trace Adkins has sparked fears for his health after slurring his way through a benefit performance in New Jersey.
The You're Gonna Miss This hitmaker, who has battled alcohol addiction in the past, was booked to play the Rockin' Country Thunder 106's Guys with Guitars Under the Stars fundraiser in Seaside Heights on Wednesday (13Jul16), but Adkins reportedly left organisers horrified after taking to the stage while apparently intoxicated.
The singer managed to make it through his three-song set, but not before some attendees had headed for the exits.
"This illness is an everyday fight," a source tells People.com. "Trace is a fighter and everyone is pulling for him."
The 54-year-old, who featured on the line-up alongside David Nail and Love and Theft, has since agreed to donate his appearance fee to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Trace last attempted to overcome his drinking issues in 2014, when he entered rehab after clashing with an Adkins impersonator while performing on a country cruise ship.
He also endured a 28-day stay in a treatment facility in 2001, after his then-wife, Rhonda, and his daughters staged an intervention.
"I was getting to the point where I was poisoning myself (by drinking so much)," he recalled of his struggles in 2009.
"I wish for anybody out there to never have to go through one of those intervention things where you sit down there and people start telling you what you're doing to them," he admitted. "You're so weak that it's come to this. Man, I hated myself at that moment."
Trace split from Rhonda, his third wife, in 2014.
