The Ladders cassette EP features five new songs recorded by the Chichester trio with the help of Rory Atwell (Test Icicles) and MJ from Hookworms. The Ladders EP will be available digitally on July 2, but the limited edition tape won't be sold in the U.S.. FatCat is sending a handful of tapes to some of their favorite stores and they'll have them free to pass on to a lucky few customers. This is a chance to catch the first wave of Traams in the U,S. and if you're a fan of Modest Mouse,Television, Wire, Mclusky or have been jamming that Parquet Courts record constantly this year, we think TRAAMS might be worth a listen as well.
Ladders and the upcoming full-length , due in September, are the sound of a band finding true solace in music as a driving force. Bassist Leigh Padley has noted that the three members of the band felt compelled towards music as the only means to escape the mundanity of their hometown; "We had to start a band." he says, "It was all we had." The band claim Mclusky, Abe Vigoda, Pavement,Television, and Women as influences and vocalist and guitarist Stu Hopkinds specifically citesStephen Malkmus, Iggy Pop, and Tom Verlaine as songwriters he admires because they all make what he calls "wonky pop", a term that also fits TRAAMS' sound perfectly. As such, Ladders is bristling and vital - a sonic escape. The band has both a both a pop immediacy and a more expansive, experimental element and incorporating the two sides is essential when writing a TRAAMS song. Hopkins elaborates, "We really want to push both those areas as far as we can. We like seeing people dance and having fun but we also want to be noisy and aggressive." That tenuous balance is what keeps TRAAMS' music endlessly exciting and keeps us coming back so often to dig into each new song with anticipations high. Keep an eye out for TRAAMS' upcoming full length later this fall. Trust us these tracks are only the beginning.
