Britain's Prime Minister Tony Blair has paid an emotional tribute to legendary radio DJ John Peel, who died on Monday (25OCT04) from a heart attack while holidaying in Peru.

Blair has thanked the late 65-year-old for developing the country's music scene and will miss listening to the broadcaster on the BBC's flagship station RADIO 1 - which Peel joined at its launch in 1967.

The Prime Minister said in a statement, "John Peel was a genuine one-off, whether on Radio 1 or Radio 4. He was a unique voice in British broadcasting and used that voice to unearth new talent and different subjects and make them accessible to a much wider audience. The prime minister knows he will be missed by everyone."
