Tommy Lee Jones has joined the cast of 'Captain America: The First Avenger'.

The Oscar-winning actor will take on the role of Colonel Chester Phillips opposite Chris Evans' portrayal of the titular character in the movie, which is due for release in July 2011.

According to an official statement, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have written the script, and the film will be directed by Joe Johnston.

The movie will tell the tale of the early days of Steve Rogers, who takes part in an underground programme for the US military - leading him to become Captain America.

In the original Marvel comics Colonel Phillips recruits Rogers to join Project Rebirth, the experimental project that leads to the creation of the Super Soldier.

Marvel confirmed Jones' casting after co-star Hayley Atwell, who plays Captain America's love interest Peggy Carter, let it at a recent red carpet event.

Also confirmed for the movie are Sebastian Stan, who will take on the role of Captain America's sidekick Bucky Barnes, Hugo Weaving as villain Red Skull and Stanley Tucci who will play Dr. Abraham Erskine.
