Rocker and activist Tom Morello recruited electronic musician Dan Deacon and rapper Immortal Technique to stage a free concert in New York as part of the Occupy Wall Street movement's May Day (01May12) march.
The Rage Against The MAChine star, one of the most fervent celebrity supporters of the waning Occupy movement, issued a rallying cry for fellow guitar players and musicians last week (ends27Apr12), urging fans and demonstrators to get involved in the so-called Occupy Guitarmy event on Tuesday.
Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Manhattan to join in the latest march, which was organised to coincide with similar movements in cities across the U.S. and Europe.
Speaking at the start of the rally, Morello told the crowd, "I travelled 3,000 miles to march with you today. It is an honour to march these streets with you, to sing these songs with you, letting the powers that be know that we will be heard."
And New York participants were treated to a little musical relief during their protest on Tuesday afternoon as Morello, Deacon and hip-hop stars Das Racist and Immortal Technique all performed for the crowds in Union Square.
