The superstar stopped by CinemaCon to take part in a Paramount Pictures upcoming movies presentation to U.S. theatre owners, and he used the opportunity to showcase footage from his action-packed Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation.

During the surprise appearance, Cruise revealed he really did hang off the side of a plane for one high-flying scene, which he had to perform eight times, with just a harness securing him to the aircraft as it took off and flew 5,000 feet (1,524 kilometres) in the air.

Cruise admitted he was terrified as he pulled off the stunt, but stated, "I want to keep audiences on the edge of their seats."

The actor was joined at the presentation by his co-stars Simon Pegg and Rebecca Ferguson.

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation is due for release in July (15).
