British Oscar hopeful Slumdog Millionaire has continued its domination of the UK box office by holding off the challenge of Tom Cruise's Valkyrie.

The Mumbai-set drama about an orphan appearing on the Hindi version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? made £2.8 million in its third week of release, up £0.2 million on its week two takings.

Nazi assassination thriller Valkyrie could only manage £1.8 million as it opened in second.

Vampire/werewolf prequel Underworld: Rise of the Lycans debuted at five, while Frost/Nixon came in a disappointing ninth.

Slumdog Millionaire is up for ten Academy awards at next month's ceremony including best picture and best director for Danny Boyle.
