Country star Toby Keith's son-in-law was a hero of the 2013 Oklahoma storms - but he almost lost his life while trying to save others.

Calling his daughter's husband "a complete knucklehead", the singer/songwriter reveals his son-in-law was out helping others in Oklahoma City when he should have been inside, safe from the tornado.

Keith tells Wenn, "He ran right out five minutes after the tornado. He saw there was a need for people being there and he knew that the emergency services and first responders were not gonna be able to get everywhere at once.

"He knew the schoolhouse was right over there behind him, so he went in like a little warrior and the first thing he does is turns his truck over all the way over onto the roof. In the next two hours he got electrocuted, and ran a nail through his boot. He rescues a woman and a kid from a pile of rubble. Then he gets trapped in a tunnel that was flooding with water at the schoolhouse, where six kids died.

"He comes back out and they finally get him out of there and he's laying there and an ambulance comes running in and almost runs him over. In three or four days, I don't think he did anything but rescue and work. He got one of my big trucks and a couple of golf carts and some tools and a trailer and every morning you see him cutting out. I saw him in the same pair of overalls with one of the straps hanging and he was leaving in that pick-up every morning, pulling that trailer and he was going into houses trying to help people and trying to dig people out."

Keith, who staged a summer charity concert to raise funds for the victims of the storms, insists Oklahoma natives have recovered from the chaos and are getting on with their lives: " If you're driving on the interstate you really got to look hard to say, 'Hey, it looks like a tornado come through here'."
