The 73-year-old entertainer made her longtime boyfriend Erwin Back wait 30 years before agreeing to exchange vows with him in Switzerland last month (Jul13), revealing it it took her a long time to realise that he would not change after they became man and wife.
In a new Tv interview with pal Oprah Winfrey, Turner says, "I kind of thought marriage says ownership: you are my wife! And I didn't want that my anything anymore. I had enough of that from growing up with my family and that situation. I just didn't want hands in control anymore. Which I didn't think Erwin would, but he might have because, psychologically, that law (marriage) changes people's minds: 'You have to do certain things now because you are my wife.'"
Turner admits that it was the thought of her longtime love not being able to legally make decisions about her estate upon her death that finally made her say yes to a proposal.
She continues, "There comes a time in life, and as everyone knows I'm 73, you must put things in place.
"First, I started consolidating. I got rid of the house in France, the property in America... anything that was costly, I totally got rid of. Then the next thing I found is that if something happened in death for me... Erwin and I weren't married... (and) he would have no say. And I thought it was a bit unfair to live with someone for as long as we are and not to give him any say."
