Near Dark Review

Very Good
An otherwise relatively straight-up vampire movie is played for cheese value, with Lance Henriksen the leader of a gang of Arizona bloodsuckers (including Bill Paxton in an unlikely role). Adrian Pasdar is pretty bland as the-guy-who-gets-bit, but there's enough comedy value from watching these stars play bad guys early in their careers that it's definitely worth a rent.

Nemesis Review

OK
Don't blame yourself if Nemesis makes virtually no sense to you. It's not your fault. It really does make minimal sense. In the near future (Japan and the U.S. have "merged"), Olivier Gruner plays a half-man half-machine cop who ends up leaving the LAPD and taking a kind of bounty hunter job for his old employers. Mass hysteria, explosions, and washed-out "futuristic" footage ensue. The acting is appalling, but the low-budget special effects do manage to impress from time to time.

Gale Force Review

Bad
I have a soft spot for reality TV, but Treat Williams' latest C-grade actioner is so bad it can't even keep a Survivor-head like me intrigued.

From the get-go, the movie is nothing but ridiculous. Williams plays a "bad boy" cop who never listens to his captain, and thus tries to take on a gang of kidnappers all by himself. He even drives his car off a suspension bridge -- and manages to land it on the pavement, still driving along!

Con Express Review

Good
Those naughty Russkies are at it again in Con Express, which features the archetypal "rogue Russian agent" trying to retrieve a load of nerve gas for nefarious ends.

No sooner than Sean Patrick Flanery's U.S. customs agent has captured Russkie Arnold Vosloo (yes, The Mummy himself) than Vosloo has escaped, sending their plane crashing into the Canadian wilderness. Flanery must then team up with a non-rogue (and female, naturally) Russian agent (Ursula Karven), to find Vosloo and his henchmen before they retrieve the nerve gas from a train (presumably the titular Con Express) headed back to the U.S.
