The Reservoir Dogs star expressed his interest in the role during a question-and-answer session with fans on, revealing he has been harbouring a secret ambition to take over the title role in the hit U.K. TV show.

One fan wrote, "Mr Roth. Would you please, please, please be the next Doctor?" and the actor replied, "Ok. If this is the casting director, I'm all for it."

The news comes after current Doctor Who Capaldi recently hinted about exiting the series less than two years after taking on the coveted role.

"This could be my final year - it's terrifying," the Scottish actor told Britain's The Telegraph newspaper. "I love Doctor Who, but it can be quite an insular world and I do want to do other things.

"There will come a time when this is over. But I knew that when I started. I was thinking about my regeneration scene from the outset. That's my terrible melancholic nature. When you accept the job you know there'll come a day, inevitably, when you'll be saying goodbye."

The Thick of It star was announced as the new Time Lord in August, 2013, taking over from Matt Smith as the 12th actor to portray the titular character. Capaldi made his debut as Doctor Who in season eight last year (14), and will return for season 10 in 2016.
