Tim Burton is dumbstruck at how strongly the loss of his parents has affected his film-making - even though he never shared a close relationship with them.

The maverick director's parents, Jean and BILL, died within a short space of time of each other, and Burton admits it rocked his foundations and altered his subsequent work - the child-parent reconciliation theme in his recent film Big Fish was no coincidence.

He explains, "Even though I wasn't that close to them, it obviously has a huge effect on your life.

"I was shocked at how much I was affected."
