The X Factor USA welcomed the return of Simon Cowell's nasty side on Wednesday's rock night show (16 November, 2011), with the music mogul ripping into a number of contestants for their mediocre performances.
According to, the evening got off to a feisty start after judge L.A. Reid described LeRoy Bell's performance of Kenny Rogers' 'We've Got Tonight', as "boring, boring, boring". Although the audience reacted angrily, Cowell agreed with the comments, bluntly telling LeRoy, "Right now, you can't win this competition". The judges began bickering with each other over Melanie Amaro's choice of song, R.E.M's 'Everybody Hurts'. Somewhat strangely, Reid suggested the band were not rock, with Cowell sniping back at him, "Call up R.E.M. and tell them they're not a rock band". The final performance of the evening came from Marcus Canty, who sang Janis Joplin's 'Piece of My Heart' while wearing a studded leather jacket and knee high boots. Cowell was clearly unimpressed with the rock and roll cliche, telling Marcus, "Your mentor (Reid), the devil, just put you in hell". The night's stand out performances came from the usual suspects - Rachel Crow performed a stirring rendition of The Rolling Stones hit '(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, while rapper Astro sang P Diddy's 'I'll Be Missing You'.
The X Factor Usa returns tonight (17th November, 2011) where two of the remaining ten performers will find themselves in the bottom two. After performing 'survival songs', one singing hopeful will be eliminated.
