The Traps - Imposter

Birmingham four-piece The Traps unveil their brand new double A-side single 'Imposter' (also 'My Grip') on March 17th 2014 through Label Fandango. The latter side of the single featured on their 2013 album 'Calypso'.

The video for 'Imposter' is a cheery montage of footage featuring the band driving down a motorway, practicing, recording and their general antics from drinking tea to playing pool. The quality is low which adds to the laid-back rawness of this indie quartet. The song is another impressive number from The Traps with its catchy crooning vocals at each chorus, soaring synths and a driving rhythm that definitely makes you want to replay.

The band are brothers Jamie Berry and Nick Berry (vocalist and bassists respectively), guitarist James Minhas and drummer Daniel Webb, and first formed in 2011. After gaining much attention for their album's title single 'Calypso', it seems that they are continuing to head in the right direction with 'Imposter'. ''Imposter' was the first song we wrote after 'Calypso'', Jamie says. 'The music had a brooding feel to it which, for some reason, conjured images of a secretive character that became the subject.' The Traps have several upcoming London dates this Spring including at The Lexington on March 14th 2014.

'Calypso': First Major Release From The Traps (Video)

The Traps

‘Calypso’ is the first major release from Birmingham-based band The Traps. It’s released on their own label, the not-so-politically correct Speech Fewapy Records. Taking its name from the character in Homer’s ‘Odyssey,’ the track also draws from the calypso music style, mixing upbeat choppy rhythms with lilting harmonies.

The Traps - Calypso

The Traps are here with their first official single 'Calypso' released in January 2013 on Speech Fewapy Records ahead of the release of their debut album.

The video for the track features a ghostly image of frontman Jamie Berry performing the song against a still backdrop of a sandy beach before it is replaced by a slightly warped image of him against an ocean backdrop. The imagery certainly suits the song's style with its up tempo synth tones, cool guitar rhythms and melodic vocals that make it a perfect summer party dance tune.

Speaking on the song's influences, Jamie talks about how the mythical goddess of the same name from Homer's 'Odyssey' was always a source of fascination for him. 'I think it is because her story isn't really dwelt upon, but she is a tragic and flawed character denied what she desires most and they are always the most interesting', he says. The Traps; who are Jamie, bassist Nick Berry, guitarist James Minhas and drummer Daniel Webb; will also release a debut album in 2013 of the same name with the help of producer Rob Jones (The Voluntary Butler Scheme). They have previously released two free downloads entitled 'Your Headland' and 'Moving Pictures'.
