The Streets rapper MIKE SKINNER has threatened to send a representative to the stage to collect his award if he's honoured at tonight's (09FEB05) BRIT AWARDS - because he hates "pretentious" ceremonies.

The DRY YOUR EYES star is notoriously against the fickle behaviour of the music industry, but agreed to attend and perform at this year's Brits because he has been nominated in four categories - Best British Male, Best British Album, Best British Single and Best Urban Act.

But a friend tells British newspaper the DAILY STAR, "Mike's not the man to get up and thank his record label and all the music industry bigwigs that sit around in suits collecting the cash. He's already broken with tradition by attending the show and performing.

"Mike's thinking of sending up an auntie, an uncle, his new group THE MITCHELL BROTHERS - or even the barman from his local pub. Not going up himself is his little way of reminding everyone that's he's not under the thumb."

Skinner will be performing on the same bill as Franz Ferdinand, Robbie Williams, Jamelia, Lemar and Natasha Bedingfield at tonight's Earl's Court spectacular.
