Seven items from the Oscar-winning musical, including three dresses, two sets of lederhosen, a sweater and shorts, will form the main attraction at the sale in Los Angeles.

In the 1965 movie, Dame Julie Andrews' character fashions the outfits for the children of the von Trapp family using old drapes, and they are expected to sell for upwards of $856,000 (£535,000).

A spokeswoman for auctioneers Nate D. Sanders says, "The costumes are especially interesting because they're made of actual curtain fabric. The costume designer wanted to be as authentic as possible so this fabric, which is a canvas type of material, was used. All seven look stunning and evoke the magic of this beloved film."

The Sound Of Music costume designer Dorothy Jeakins was nominated for best costume design at the 1966 Academy Awards for her work on the film.

The auction takes place on 30 April (15).
