DEPUTY ITALIAN PRIME MINISTER has added his weight to the growing clamour against The Sopranos' depiction of Italians and Italian-Americans.
GIANFRANCO FINI, the leader of Italy's rightwing NATIONAL ALLIANCE PARTY, took part in New York's Columbus Day Parade yesterday (11OCT04).
The politician praised the contribution made by Italians whose forebears had settled in America, adding, "No television series can undo it."
The Sopranos debate last surfaced two years ago (02) when New York Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, invited two members of the show's cast to the Columbus Day Parade. Organisers were outraged and said the gangster series depicted Italian-Americans as "uneducated, lowlife brutes".12/10/2004 13:51
