The musician, who was part of the former The Smiths star's backing band from 1991 and became his chief songwriting partner until they ended their business relationship in 2004, put the axe up for sale on earlier this month (Feb16).

The signed guitar was used in the recording studio and during Morrissey live shows, and a keen fan put in a winning bid of $2,500 before the online auction closed on Tuesday night (09Feb16).

In the original listing, Whyte described the instrument as "a solid great guitar in the vein of a Les Paul but has the sound of the vintage Gretsch".
