The acclaimed band, led by drummer Questlove, staged its ninth annual Roots Picnic in their native Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Saturday (04Jun16), when Usher, DMX, Blood Orange, Leon Bridges, Future, and Willow Smith hit the stage.
Willow even introduced her dad, hometown hero Will Smith, who performed his rap classic Summertime.
During Usher's headlining set with The Roots, rapper Black Thought told fans to "stay tuned" for news about the group's planned Big Apple expansion, and on Monday (06Jun16), the full details were officially announced.
The New York edition of the Roots Picnic will take place over two days on 1 and 2 October (16) at Manhattan's Bryant Park, with D'angelo and Mayer both teaming up for special sets with Questlove and his group.
Rapper Kevin Gates and singer Jeremih are also on the bill for the Saturday, while the Sunday line-up is described as "A love letter to New York", with artists including Wu-Tang Clan, David Byrne, and Chic star Rodgers, who will all hit the stage backed by The Roots.
Swizz Beatz, DJ Jazzy Jeff, and hip-hop veterans EPMD will also perform, while other acts are expected to be announced in the coming months.
"This is the culmination of a two and a half year journey that we have embarked upon with our partners at (promoters) Live Nation to bring The Roots Picnic to NYC," said festival co-founder Shawn Gee. "We launched the brand in Philadelphia nine years ago and plan to continue to build and grow the Philly event in the future."
