Rocker The Edge has lost the first round of his battle to build five mansions on cliff-top land he owns in Malibu, California.
Officials at the California Coastal Commission have voted to deny his proposal.
The U2 guitarist wanted to develop the properties on a rugged ridge above Malibu that is home to mountain lions and native plants.
Commission executive director Peter Douglas tells the Los Angeles Times, "In 38 years of this commission’s existence, this is one of the three worst projects that I’ve seen in terms of environmental devastation... You can’t be serious about being an environmentalist and pick this location."
Douglas expects the matter to go to court.
