Comedy Central's The Daily Show and The Colbert Report may soon be restored on Hulu, the video website owned by News Corp. (Fox), General Electric (NBC Universal), Disney (ABC), and Providence Equity Partners. Comedy Central, which is owned by Viacom, a company that has taken a tough stance vis-a-vis online video sites (it's pursuing a $1-billion damage suit against YouTube), yanked the hit late-night shows from Hulu last March in a dispute over upfront payments. It was unclear from the Times report whether the shows would be made available online via the ad-supported Hulu free service or whether they would become part of the new Hulu Plus subscription service. The Coen Brothers' True Grit showed just that as it outperformed industry forecasts for the second weekend in a row. According to studio estimates, the Paramount film, which earned about $24.5 million was edged out by Universal's Little Fockers , which grossed some $26.3 million. With $86.8 million in ticket sales, True Grit has already become the Coens' highest-grossing film. On a per-theater basis, Grit , which is playing at 3,083 venues, averaged $7,947, besting Fockers , which is playing at 3,554 venues and averaged $7,400. The box office as a whole lacked New Year's fireworks, dropping 26 percent below the total gross for the same weekend a year ago. No new film opened in wide release, but two new films that opened on Wednesday in limited engagements performed well. The British film Another Year took in about $173,175 from six theaters over the five days, while The Weinstein Co.'s Blue Valentine raked in a terrific $277,945 -- or $70,000 per theater -- from four venues over the five days.
