Liam Fray claims anybody who doesn't have an ego shouldn't front a band.

The famously forthright singer and guitarist claims anyone who wants to sing in a band needs to have an attitude.

Talking ahead of his band's performance at the Hard Rock Cafe presents Absolute Radio Sessions in Edinburgh, UK, Liam said: "The thing with our band is, there's not many, well there isn't any egos.

"I mean, obviously you've got mine, but that's fine, the band know it, you know it you've got to."

"If you don't have an ego then get in the background. But the band knew when they signed up, it wasn't like I put an advert in, a magazine and said 'Please come and be my friend, we'll start a band because a label wants to give us loads of money',

"It was the complete opposite."

Liam - who is joined in The Courteeners by Michael Campbell, Daniel Conan Moores and Mark Cuppello - also dispelled rumours he is to release a solo record, saying he's already started writing material for the group's third album.

He added: "writing, I'm kind of starting to get bits and bobs together for the next record, so I'm always really writing, but I wouldn't say I've planned for a solo album."
