The musical adaptation of Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Color Purple has been such a smash hit in Atlanta, Georgia it's finally heading to Broadway, New York City.

Director Steven Spielberg turned Alice Walker's critically-acclaimed novel into an award-winning movie in 1985, starring Oprah Winfrey, Danny Glover and Whoopi Goldberg.

And writer Marsha Norman was so impressed by the film's success, she adapted it to the stage with composers Brenda Russell, ALLEE WILLIS and STEPHEN BRAY.

GARY GRIFFIN directed the production, which received its world premiere in Atlanta's Alliance Theatre in September (04).

The show - about a young African-American girl who is raped by her father and suffers years of cruelty from her abusive husband - has caused such a stir, it's hitting Broadway in December (05).
