The Avengers director Joss Whedon has spent 15 years working on his own controversial version of Hamlet.

The Buffy The Vampire Slayer creator recently made a low-budget film of William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, and he has now revealed he is hoping to translate another of the Bard's famous plays for the big screen.

Whedon admits he has spent 15 years working on a dark version of the tragedy, but fears his adaptation might be too divisive to ever get made.

When asked whether he is planning any more Shakespeare projects, he tells the Bbc, "It would be Hamlet. Am I original! Hamlet I actually started adapting 15 years ago when I had no idea how I could ever fund it... I have my own particular vision of that text - and it's not very pretty."
