If results in Australia are any indication, predictions that The Avengers will take over as the No. 1 film at the box office this year may be right on the mark. According to trade reports, the movie opened down-under on Wednesday with $6 million, exceeded only by the last Harry Potter movie, which took in $7 million. In 10 markets, the film raked in $17.1 million. including the biggest opening day of all time in New Zealand, where it collected $800,000. The film is not due to debut in the U.S. until May 4, but is expanding into 42 overseas markets this weekend, including the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, and Latin America. Today's Hollywood Reporter said that the film is expected to debut domestically "north of $150 million, based on the strength of pre-release tracking."
