Taylor Lautner is set to join forces with helmer Gus Van Sant for an upcoming independent movie.

The 'Twilight' star is reportedly close to tying up a deal to team up with the director - who took the helm of 'Milk' and recent film 'Restless' - on a project about a non-fiction article in The New Yorker magazine that the 'Abduction' actor has optioned.

The motion picture is set to be produced via the 19-year-old hunk's Quick Six production company, which he runs with his father Dan Lautner.

And it is thought Taylor is keen for his acting career to go in a different direction after starring in the 'Twilight' franchise since 2008, with the penultimate movie in the vampire series, 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1', set to hit the big screen on November 18.

Aside from 'Twilight', Taylor's latest movie saw him star as Nathan in action thriller 'Abduction' alongside Lily Collins, Sigourney Weaver and Jason Isaacs.
