The former True Detective and Friday Night Lights star will star as Koresh, the leader of the Branch Davidians religious sect, in the limited series. The show will be based on the 1993 siege of the sect's base in Waco, Texas, which included a deadly shootout, a lengthy standoff between government agents and sect members, and a fire, which burned down the compound and killed 76 people inside, including Koresh.

Boardwalk Empire's Michael Shannon is set to play Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) negotiator Gary Noesner, while rapper/actor Ludacris is in the frame to portray Branch Davidian member Wayne Martin, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Harvey Weinstein, Jennifer Malloy and Megan Spanjian of Weinstein Television, who plan to pitch the show to networks in September (16), said, "This event series will explore the truth behind this tragedy and speaks directly to the heart of the current issues between citizens, law enforcement and the media. With the addition of dedicated and talented actors like Michael and Taylor, Waco will deliver on the promise of a sophisticated and harrowing exposé that is sure to be appointment viewing TV.”

The series will be written by brothers John Erick and Drew Dowdle, who penned movies No Escape and Quarantine, and both will executive produce alongside Shannon and Kitsch. John Erick will also direct.
