The Empire star was enjoying the big game from the comfort of a VIP suite at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, where she was joined by her rumoured boyfriend, American footballer Kelvin Hayden, and a group of pals.

She took to social media to share her delight at the start of the Super Bowl half-time show performance, which also featured appearances from Beyonce and Bruno Mars, but fans were quick to point out her mistake after she incorrectly identified British stars Coldplay for American rockers Maroon 5.

"YAAAAAAASSSSSS!!!!" she exclaimed alongside one video clip of the gig. "#maroon5 is life to me!!! #superbowl50 #HappyCamper I am."

She soon deleted the post after realising her gaffe, and laughed about the mishap on Twitter, writing, "Oooooooopppps. Lmao (laughing my a** off)!"

Taraji has since explained the mix-up in an interview with U.S. news show Entertainment Tonight, blaming her pals for causing her confusion.

"They (stadium bosses) put a lot of drinks in there (the suites) - Kool-Aid (sugary drink), lemonade, iced tea. I mixed it all, and I sat there, and I'm sitting with people who drank the Kool-Aid as well."

"Everyone's talking about Maroon 5, and I put it down (on social media)," she continued. "And I'm like, 'That's not Maroon 5, right?' And they're like, 'No, that's Maroon 5!' and I'm like, 'Are you sure?'"

Taraji reveals she was immediately inundated with text messages from her friends, who highlighted her flub, although it took her a minute to realise what they were referring to.

"Everybody texted me: 'Change your post! Change your post!'" she giggled. "I (thought) they were mad because I didn't give all my eyes to Beyonce, and I'm like, 'The Beyonce post is coming!' Then I realised it was Coldplay."

Brushing off the social media mishap, the actress added, "I'm human. I made a mistake. It happens! Come on, I drank the Kool-Aid (believed what everyone was telling her)!"
