The Oscar-nominated artist is one of the film's new backers, and he will also write and create original songs and oversee all musical elements for the movie and its soundtrack.

Based on a true story, Hidden Figures centres on three African-American National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) employees, who helped astronaut John Glenn become the first American to orbit the Earth in 1962.

"After my producing partner Mimi Valdes and I heard about this project, we basically begged the producers and studio to allow us to participate," Williams says in a statement. "This is an extraordinary story about black women with genius mathematical minds who contributed to American history. It takes place in Virginia, my home state, and at NASA, a place I've been obsessed with since childhood."

The project marks Williams' second film credit, after serving as an executive producer on acclaimed 2015 drama Dope.

Hidden Figures will feature Oscar winner Octavia Spencer, Taraji P. Henson and R&B star Janelle Monae, as well as Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst, and Jim Parsons.
