Among the lots available to bidders were a number of items used in the Rocky films, including Sylvester's leather jacket, which he wore as underdog boxer Rocky Balboa and boxing trunks he donned for Rocky IV.

The iconic jacket sold for $149,000 (£99,333), almost twice the original estimate by Heritage Auctions, the company which conducted the sale.

The boxing trunks sold for $57,500 (£38,333), slightly less than the $60,000 (£40,000) one bidder paid for a poncho worn by the Hollywood superstar in his action epic First Blood, the first in the Rambo series of films.

The actor, who attended some sessions of the auction in person, also sold off some personal mementos including a pair of boxing gloves worn by Muhammad Ali and inscribed with a personal message from the boxer.

"The memorabilia I have has been used and been a part of my life for, kind of hard to admit this, well over 40 years," Sylvester wrote in a message posted on the Heritage Auctions website. "It's been in my possession and I've fond memories attached to just about every object. There comes a point, though, when I think that I've used these objects enough and have created enough memories that I can let them go."

Some of the proceeds of the sale will go to charities which help U.S. military veterans and wounded service personnel.
