Production on The Expendables 2 has been halted after one stuntman was killed and another critically injury during filming in Bulgaria. The unidentified stuntmen were shooting an explosion scene near Sofia on Thursday (27th October 2011), when things went awry.

E! News reports how one of the men died near Lake Ognyanovo, a reservoir outside the capital. Although little is known of the specific incident, it is understood another man remains unconscious in hospital after undergoing a five-hour operation. Local authorities have launched an investigation into the accident, while Hollywood production company Nu Image/Millennium released a statement promising to fully cooperate with police. It read, "It is with great regret that we confirm this unfortunate accident. Our hearts go out to the families and those on the production affected by this tragedy. The filmmakers are working closely with the authorities in responding to and investigating this accident" The movie boasts a stellar cast including Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis, however, the main stars were filming two-and-a-half miles away in the village of Bansko when the incident occurred. Back in 2002, Vin Diesel's stuntman Harry L. O'Connor died while filming a scene for action movie xXx.

The first Expendables movie earned mixed reviews upon its release, but nevertheless raked in $274 million at the box office.
