Movie mogul Sydney Pollack fears he will never retire - because he couldn't justify his existence if he stopped making films.

The 70-year-old director says that although the gruelling film-making process makes him frustrated and insecure, he needs it to learn about himself and define his reason for living.

He explains, "Every time I finish a picture, I feel like I've done what I'm supposed to do in the sense that I've earned my stay for another year or so.

"I don't know what use I have other than that. If I don't make movies, what the hell do I do?"
